You could try facit sandstone mine over at whitworth, it's listed on here. A full day out there

Its not as bad as it looks IMHO yes there are some suspect areas and roofs but that could be true in any mine, for example Cwmorthin, rhosydd and croesor are all well visited but have dodgy areas!!

I have explored Facit extensively and never really felt in danger, but then again i err on the side of caution, learn what to look for and be carefull. roundbarn is like facit just a lot smaller and less to see, whichever mine you choose have fun and enjoy yourself

Please read the access agreement for facit though on adit now.

Cheers Ste, i will check out the access info, and maybe tempted to take a look around there just got to find me some like minded ppl to get down there with, my bro normally comes with me but he gets stuck for time, can i just ask when you have been in Round barn mines, the one furthest to the left of the quarry entrance that you have to scramble down abit to get in, has allot of candles set out like an alter, do you know what this is for, and also when going to the bottom then the sharp left up and through into the main junction area, have you ever encountered any breathing problems, i think i have but not sure if it was down to fear of the unknown or black damp, i turned and got out anyway, i have been all round in all 3 at round barn but this particular day in the far one encountered this prob that i didn't have the first time, i have allot to learn so im treading with extreme caution. Thanks

Daz.

As far as the candles go i have no idea, they do look a bit spooky though!! I haven't met with any breathing problems at the far end and have spent a fair old time in there, its a shame you didnt go a bit further as that is by far the largest of the three.

Its a good mine to learn in! what to look for regarding roof falls and cracks, rooting beams etc. The middle mine is in remarkable condition and shows good examples of how the stone was extracted.

i've noticed you wish to visit Facit at some stage, leave that with me and i'll see what i can do, you would need insurance which you can buy on adit now for around £22 for a year, very good value. Time is in short supply at the moment due to work but in a month or so i could arrange something

Used to be a lot of shallow coal workings up there. On LH side of the road up to the transmitter, before the Scotchman's Post. After a couple of youths from Horwich (?) got lost in there, the NCB bulldozed the entrances. Last time up there many moons ago, there was one hole they'd missed. Wasn't tooled up for going UG then so didn't investigate.

Bad air would now be a problem of course. Previously, because of the number of connections to grass, air was good. Main roadways were heavily timbered, mostly with railway sleepers. Still (then) in good nick.

one incident of mine rescue which was reported can be found http://www.daveweb.co.uk/whvol2.pdf and dates back from 1976 ,
both NCB and the water authority spend there time destroying anything which remotely resembles a opening or could be used,
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J8wZqhaTkcM/T3jbsPirr_I/AAAAAAAAIa4/hla2g...
it is not clear why they were digging in this area as it does not seem to have been used for entrances or tunnels , adit levals are found and shafts further up the hill and are seen in the photograph as fenced off areas , this is on the right hand side of the road leading up to the mast , and to the right of the old tramway
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5CkNSjHzYho/T3jb9rugvtI/AAAAAAAAIbY/_AEwD...
this is seen as a green line going towards the left of the mast and was used to transport coal and fireclay from one of the levals,
to the right is seen hole bottom - old brickworks
Jakes Dad,

Jake records what he finds on the Winter hill area,

Thanks for the links Jake & Jake's Dad. Yes, the 1976 incident is the one I recall. NCB - as they were then known were filling in everything in sight after that. Everything they SAW that is. ha.ha. Although we used to take Protector lamps down, we never detected any "caps" at all. As previously said, plenty of opening/draughts then !

Keep up the good work !

Breathing problems are usually a good indication that either A: you are unfit or B: there could be bad air.

Bad air can consist of a few different types the 2 most common being high CO2 levels (carbon dioxide) or low oxygen levels (iron mines suffer from this as the iron ore strips the oxygen from the atmosphere). If you are in a mine and start to experience breathing difficulties then it is probably low oxygen levels and you are trying harder to breath to bring your 02 sats back up. Sadly C02 gas is very hard to detect without a gas sniffer and is the deadliest of the gases because you don't know it's there, you just collapse and if not rescued, die! There are also other gas types such as Carbon Monoxide, Methane (commonly found in coal mines) and Hydrogen Sulphide (which is caused by rotting organic matter or the breakdown of sulphur, hydrogen sulphide can be recognized by the smell given off which stinks like rotten eggs or stink bombs.

If you are unsure of a mine the best thing to do is check the forums first to see if anyone as reported bad air, if not trust your judgement and if it does not seem right then leave. As time goes on and experience builds you will recognize the signs a lot more easily.

Not to put you off though enjoy your caving.
