Hey all, I'm not very good at these introduction thingys so I'll keep it short n sweet

I've quite recently got into exploring and photographing stuff with underground definitely being my favourite. I've done a few culverts and drains and was lucky enough to be invited to explore a mine a few weeks back (I already recognise a lot of names on here! )

I have my eye on a few in North Wales after seeing other peoples photos so would love to see them for myself. I'm 'apparently' easily led (according to the wife!) so up for all sorts of stuff (so long as its suitable for the 'larger' gentleman! )

If anyone fancies a mooch at stuff I've been up to so far, theres photos at http://www.snakeoil-urbex.co.uk/

Thanks Owdsnuffy, I hope to add a few more underground stuff

I'm just outside Manchester, so Cumbria is a fair trek but not totally out of reach

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V5xlzNp5GV8/T6fIZ3_2SDI/AAAAAAAAJ-E/Th87b... Jake has low presence kit on him here , it meets or exceeds fell running standards , he has a full overnight survival kit, GPS tracker, torch whistle , map ,compass ,MS2000 strobe, phone, food. Jake is trained to find safe water. The trainers he uses are walsh PB race, they will stick to anything wet or dry , Jake also has tested these to limits so knows when they will no longer grip or there is a risk, http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z2gPLoWfFOY/T6fI4SuAXaI/AAAAAAAAJ-c/hwDIK... shows you the environment Jake will go across , this took under 20 mins to go up 600 ft straight up and across keeping a contour for just under a mile. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tgFdik7Hewc/T6fRBafb78I/AAAAAAAAKI0/9KMwG... Jake has swapped to underground kit , his kit has changed to duel coat -like keela munro , two 12 hour light sticks, backup light, some spares for keeping dry and this was for a 10 minute explore http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X0pBadtK_Y0/T6fR__AW45I/AAAAAAAAKKs/RNJ1N... this shows the third variation speed , this is a fast down section with the weather now around 2 and feel factor around -4 Jake switches to high viz gortex plus hi viz vest , the mines so far / underground with a leading expert in coal mines adult to Jake 3:1 , slate mine 2:1 with a expert in this mine, every tunnel and passage way , risk is still there agreed, Jake encounters risk on winter hill, we manage that risk through my skill and my training of Jake, Jake can read a compass, navigate in driving wind/rain at night , in snow, day or night , we always leave a comfort zone, if we are not sure or Jake is not happy we turn back there is always another day or perhaps we decide the risk is too much Whist i understand your concern , age and disability should not be a barrier to pushing himself i can assure you he wants to do more but realises he needs understanding and skills , Jake is a remarkable person and very special if you met him you would realise, Jake is more at risk on a playground due to his disability and his inability to understand social situations thanks for you comments but I wanted to set the record straight on how carefully I take Jakes safety , we don't rely on technology but Experience, Skill* taught and through experience and equipment, but most of all common sense! Simon

Actually I didn't want to look like a nutter but I was considering writing a second one after my first before you replied. It is sometimes hard to detach from being a 'smother mother' to acknowledging that it's no different in a way to sending my daughter to Gymnastics, she'd hate it if I stopped her out of fear that she might fall off the parrallel bars! Because looking at further pics and trip reports you can see just how seriously you do take his safety. And as a 'newbie' I am fascinated by his inherent skill and thought for what he is doing which are obvious from the blog. That's some serious kit on Jake too, a future Dave Bicks in the making! I am definately going to be a follower of the blog from now on...hey sorry didn't mean to sound condescending at all, my fingers were on the keys with the first post before I had put my brain into gear. Liz,
to get this kit right ,
background the family lived in the Czech republic for 3 years , shopping was in spring done at -21 we learnt how to keep the kids warm ! Winter Hill is a great place but can bite, I lived in the lake district for 10 years and spent another 2 years being trained on how to survive hostile conditions, we never take anything for granted his mum can track where he is when out and about overland anywhere we ,
they don't make some stuff in Jakes size !
Keela munro are used by most mountain rescue teams , we use combinations of Ron hill elite and keela to get near this, Gortex (north face summit) has let me down in cold wet conditions on winter hill , for these conditions Jake uses a double ventile coat !
Jake normally has one level of equipment up from me as he is smaller and less tolerant ,
Simon
