Tom Ferry: Split thread for locating missing airbox artefact thread:

Aberllyn, sorry got carried away. I have others taken at the same time, I will get these scanned and uploaded. These are late 1990s. Its agame of 'spot the helmets' Blue Joe Brown is late 1980s and early 1990s. Light blue Caving Supplies Protex is later 1990s, red Ecrins are 2000 onwards. The CS helmet was afree gift from Phil Brown after I taked him though, over the phone, getting rid of a virus on his computer.
Tom, please keep these ID posts coming as they are bringing back some fond memories and other stuffas well as generating the inclination to do some of it again.
I am now going on a photo hunt, so watch this space.

Very nice! I shall dig out some modern equivalents.

Roy , do you have any other Cae coch even surface ? I know I have loads but I don’t have any “old “ images , a lot has changed on the surface there .. (y)

I will have good look.
Just a question, re Aberllyn, has anything in my underground photos changed over years?
I cant find my Harrold Morris photo, up to my kneck in gloop if memory serves.

I’ll do a separate thread shortly for Aberllyn , the airbox to the best of my knowledge is now under a collapse … I know the gwydyr like the back of my hand but Aberllyn is my least known one of the large mines …. This image has shocked me …..

You will have a email coming your way in the next few days .

P.s Shon isn’t good and is in care , can you have a think who else knows the gwydyr well like he did ? I need to know a couple things from people who have “been around a good while “ purely for research purposes .

Tom

Tom, you comments reinforce the importance of knowledge being recorded and the importance of what we are doing in achieving this. I have a feeling that a return visit to many of these sites will leave me feeling sad. Look at the fine timbering in Aberllyn, I wonder what its like now. I dont know how much of it you have done but the top level is grilled, and for good reason, I have memory of getting up there to a mass of false floor..

It is very much gone. Some of that timbering collapsed as while back. But I think the airbox was gone before that. There are a lot of toothed planks of wood randomly around places which are probably from it or the other wooden ventilation 'pipes'. The images are great - I would otherwise have never known what it used to be like

Has anyone, saved these other Aberllyn photos to our data base ?

I shall be posting my photos shortly busy busy

I think it's buried roy under a collapse , been talking to a few people and nobody recalls it ....

The deterioration in the gwydyr mines is very common with he more modern timber , the older stuff is sound .
I think its buried at the end of this photo after talking to a couple people

is a very good comparison to your photo .

I am going to speak to a large amount of people regarding this area , I shall ask yourself a few questions . I need to do this for my own peace of mind & ill put together a few short articles I believe that explain a few key points .

ill dig out a couple more comparison shots , This air box needs uncovering if its there.

p.s , I am confident I havent seen all of aberllyn ... I shall need to take a final visit around the site .

Got you going, hasnt it.
I wonder if the airbox was removed somehow, the exact spot should be easy to identify. The timbers above me look sound, and if you look carefully there is a shute just behind me.
I would take a garden trowel, best tool for the job if its burried.

yes , its very easy to reach . my hands are very busy this year already with many large projects . This would not take long tbh , needs to be done with care like you say .

I have just zoomed into my shot. The airbox appears to be on top of a boulder, also note the buckets. The one by me appears to have a bottle in it, the other is opposite, plus what looks like a tin of some sort, and some ironwork. All these, plus the timberwork, are location clues. At the high resolution, one can zoom into a shot and see detail, my pics off the modern digital camera are 5152 X 3864 px, its a Sony DSC H400. I think the camera is about 26 mpx. The Aberllyn shots are scans off colour prints, but not too bad by my current standard.

I dont know how good you are at this, so I have done it. A couple of zoom shots, look at the shape of the timber above my head, also the airbox. In the distance , the timberwork looks like in your last shot.

Yes that timber above your head is definitely a good ID one , someone may deem this a worthy project & beat me to it ! I do hope it’s found and an article is posted online about the story !

If not I certainly know someone in the future who would happily do it :)

Going to speak to Rob .V today , this will certainly be gettin mentioned. I plan on doing an article about the deterioration of the gwydyr forest , Chris.c will turn this to “real english “ then it will go on Buddle pit . I am confident with my knowledge, your old trip reports , your photos & speaking with you and others it will be an interesting read .
