The captive bolt in the JH lid, which locks the plate covering the latch, was recently reported to be loose, and upon inspection was found to be worn to the extent that the threads were no longer engaging with the captive nut welded onto the underside of the lid, and so the bolt did nothing.

We've been out this morning, and have managed to re-tap a new thread to M14 X 2 size, and have installed a new captive bolt of that size, and so the lid now locks again. Please take care of this new bolt as we may not have enough steel left in the system to re-tap again to an even larger size, and in that case, a new lid will probably be required - potentially quite a big job, as all the fixings and hinges are concreted in. So the longer this one keeps working, the better for all!

If using a non-adjustable spanner, the correct size to take from now on is M22.

In nowhere near here but can potentially offer free on site welding if the nut ever needs cutting off & new one fitting should be a easy job.

Thanks for the offer - but we do now have onsite welding capability (as will be revealed in the next Derbyshire Caver), so I think we should be OK if it comes to that. Personally I'd like to fit a new, lighter lid next time, as it's somewhat cursed for me, having nearly split my skull completely open (long story).
