Gwaelod-y-Garth residents evacuated after flood strikes village

One resident says he was met with a "wall of water" when he went to see what was going on.

Residents of a village on the outskirts of Cardiff have been evacuated after a flood on Thursday afternoon

Roads have been shut in Gwaelod-y-Garth, with reports of water up to 5ft (1.5m) deep in some homes.

Emergency services are at the scene and people have been advised to avoid the area.

The Breedon Group confirmed there had been an "incident in its quarry" this afternoon.

There were some fairly recent photos of the iron workings on one of the urbex bulletin boards / or possibly aditnow a few years ago.

Confirmation that the old Garth Iron mine was disturbed, and that was the source of the water


Last week a number of houses were flooded after a quarry blasting operation, thankfully nobody was injured

It now seems that the blasting may have released water in old Iron mine workings

A planned quarry blast caused rock to displace a "substantial volume" of water from the mine, HSE says.

Sounds like gross negligence to me. They must of known of the mines existence and proximity to their workings. I know the old M&Q regs have been replaced but surely the "protection against inrush" precautions are still mandatory in the current regs?

I suspect there were seriously flawed assumptions made about blast vibration impacts on the old workings, much as was the case with the surface collapses around Great Hucklow when Milldam was last worked.
