I have just come back from an interesting day out in the Peaks. A level I wanted to check out was visited and found in an area new to me. Its north of Hartington at about SK12533 62192 and right by the minor road. I virtually parked right outside. Its gated but unlocked with another gate further in just before a shaft to surface, this, and a drainage pipe suggest maybe use as a store. The level does not go far but has some nice packwalls and flowstone. A plaque on the outer gate bears the legend "Ludwell Mine. 1862. Len Kirkham and team", this suggest it was dug open fairly recently. It end at a shaft to surface which is clear, its possible that this was the project and not a reopening. I have hit a Derbyshire County Council record of it on a web search.
A nice little visit in very pleasant surroundings. I parked almost right outside it. I am wondering what other locations are this convenient.
In the peaks there is of course Hanging Flat, and Bonsall Leys in Via Gellia, but no real parking right outside it. Further afield, of course Nenthead car park and Haggs we all know about, and I seem to remember one somewhere near Grassington? I have also visited a manganese mine I believe near Dolellau right by the road, since grilled.
Good stuff for bad weather.
