Roadside Mine

I have just come back from an interesting day out in the Peaks. A level I wanted to check out was visited and found in an area new to me. Its north of Hartington at about SK12533 62192 and right by the minor road. I virtually parked right outside. Its gated but unlocked with another gate further in just before a shaft to surface, this, and a drainage pipe suggest maybe use as a store. The level does not go far but has some nice packwalls and flowstone. A plaque on the outer gate bears the legend "Ludwell Mine. 1862. Len Kirkham and team", this suggest it was dug open fairly recently. It end at a shaft to surface which is clear, its possible that this was the project and not a reopening. I have hit a Derbyshire County Council record of it on a web search.

A nice little visit in very pleasant surroundings. I parked almost right outside it. I am wondering what other locations are this convenient.
In the peaks there is of course Hanging Flat, and Bonsall Leys in Via Gellia, but no real parking right outside it. Further afield, of course Nenthead car park and Haggs we all know about, and I seem to remember one somewhere near Grassington? I have also visited a manganese mine I believe near Dolellau right by the road, since grilled.

Good stuff for bad weather.

Hafna .
Pandora.

Not maenoffern ! unless you have permission and a 4WD :sneaky:

Tom - not exactly by the roadside, but BB is on the mark, well sort of, they are grilled so not exactly walk ins.
Of course, anything right next to a road is likely to attract a gate or grill.

This was from yesterday, and there is the Skoda right outside.

Well u used to be able to drive into middleton mine!
After exploring here I met a guy who lived local & swore he used to take a short cut through the mine from one side of valley to other (mainly when he was pissed from what I gather) lol

There is the Hopton end the Middleton end, but hardly through a valley..

I once drove a Mazda into a sea cave near Porthmadog, wish I had my camera then.

There is a roadside adit as near to the road the Derbyshire one. The Bosorne Adit in Cot Valley, St Just. You can stand on the council road and look straight at it, not knowing its there. Its totally covered with vegetation, but entry is not difficult. For those with a wet suit it leads to an interesting little stope with steps going up the footwall.
I forgot about this one.
Theere is another a stones throw away from the road down near the sea

I rather thing PeteJ had a oldish photo of a Landrover being driven into the mouth of Blackburn Level at Rotherhope Fell Mine, it was quite a tight fit.

I believe is still accessible though now more of a 'garden feature' in the renovated mine office hence permission needed.
