The upper tunnel discribed is 'Yorkshire Dave's' comment probably leaded to a further chamber. the tunnel is blocked - after a short distance by large chunks of good slate rock. A torch can then be used to light up gaps between the rocks, where some open space can be seen. There is a picture of this adit near the bottom of the gallery, which is titled 'Entrace' and is uploaded by me. Some very cool person has also dressed some slates and placed them at the tunnel entrance.

More on the site

There are two further sections of working although neither extensive, one is past the main tips/ buildings/ site area and further up the hill tucked away out of site. Follow the path past the tips going up hill into the woods and its about 400m along on the left, the tramway can be seen cut into the hill. Follow the cutting and go up hill from the last tip to reveal a surface chamber. The second is an adit directly up the hill side from the entance to the long adit tunnel (Assembly point B/ 2) past the closed chamber to the quarry. Basically come off the main track/ road up the path to the long tunnel entrance + tip, keep going on this path t climb higher up the wood above the entrance bearing left to reach an adit which becomes obvious by its tip directly in front. This adit leads about 70M into the hill to what looks like a collapse. Back out on the surface the workings can be identifed by a cut into the hill as the path continues right to the to the very top of the quarry. The yellow markings in the closed chmaber mark cracks in the rock where pieces are starting to break away and may fall! These were done by the safety survey group following the large boulder fall in the main cavern about 18 months ago. Enjoy!

This working is defiantly worth a visit. Access is via a tunnel on the hillside near little Langdale, Ambleside, which then leads to a sizeable chamber supported by a large pillar. There is then a narrow tunnel from the chamber to the nearby pit quarry where there are tunnels of multiple choices. The low tunnel facing north leads to the hillside were there is another higher entrance to the cathedral chamber. Another tunnel leads to a tiny Close-head, while the other lower tunnel leads to the hillside via a long passage. At about 12 m into the passage there is a junction with a second tunnel leading to a large chamber. more pics of this mine coming in 2 days.
