Ownership

This mine is owned by the Crown. The surface and buildings are owned by the previous operator. The previous operator or representative can only stop you from crossing his land. The mine was abondoned before the new water regs came into force and as such the Crown in conjunction with the NRA are liable for any dirty water.

Water authority survey

In view of Miles' comments, i have a copy of a report on the water quality that exits Gwynfynydd and enters the river. There are/ were many regulations that the owners had to adhere too during the working days of the mine. As the place is still owned privately, the owner is still resposible. The implications of the river turning brown due to explorers cannot be stressed enough.

Access to this mine

Myself and a few others visited this mine recently and had a look around. Much to our alarm, after we got out of the mine the previously blue sparkling river in the valley (Mawdach) was flowing a deep brown colour and did so for some time. Clearly our kicking up sediment in the mine tunnels had a huge and very obvious polluting effect on the river. I've also been alerted to the fact that despite the mine seeming to be long abandoned and forgotten about, the owners actually are very protective and are seriously against anybody entering it. Knowing now what I do I would say to anybody thinking of going for an explore here not to do so. The mine would be best left well alone. Anybody going in there is risking getting in serious trouble. It's very obvious when somebody is in there as the whole river just goes brown. There are plenty of other mines to see!
