The picture by pgunn of the tunnels on the foreshore had nothing to do with Loftus mine, nor even ironstone mining! One is the end of a tunnel from the bottom of a shaft (now filled) sunk pre-1700 to lift coal up to Boulby Alum Works, and lower finished alum crystals down to a jetty for export by boat. Works closed in 1871 and shaft probably filled shortly after. Jutting out of the cliff face some 200 feet above is the tippler from Boulby Ironstone Mine for dumping shale on the foreshore (1903 - 1934).

Good tour of a former Ironstone Mine, worth a visit if in the area.
