Ten Years Ago
I remember going in this mine ten years ago. I did not know its name at that time, or any other info about it. I followed the main adit until its condition deteriorated. From then on I was waist deep in water crawling over shale fall after shale fall for a long distance with no improvement. Finally, demoralised I gave up. What a wuss huh ?

The passage is open (just)
Just to ammend my last post: The level is still open beyond the major blockage point and we have been further within, please be aware however that the ceiling is very loose and cracks are evident all around so further falls may be inevitable. From the blockage point the level becomes very low and wet!

Major collapse
Been back into Racketgill today after a lot of heavy rain and I found a major blockage with no visible way through, this is at about 400ft - we know there are wooden floors boyond this point so we are thinking that these have collapsed. I am told that this was open about two weeks ago! We also noticed that about 50ft into the adit some of the stone blockwork has been dislodged and falled, this has also happened recently and looks as though there has been a small degree of movement. I would still consider the adit to be fairly stable.

Racketgill
I've been through all of this mine, it is muddy at the enterance, and there is about 1 foot of water for the first 40ft (sometimes just above CWD), after that it completly dry. There are lots of interesting workings above this level (old shafts and stopes etc). As far as I know there are no false floors or anything particularly dangerous on the level which you enter, however all the water which pours in through the old shaft near the enterance disappears somewhere through the floor, so still take care. The level is about 1/ 4 of a mile long and has several small trials coming off it, the air is suprisingly good for a mine with no ventilation!
