If you look again you will notice these drifts are into the Alum Shale a few feet below the Dogger ironstone (Top Seam) and were for exploiting cement nodules generally found at this horizon. The collected nodules were carted to the Mill at East Row for burning then grinding to produce 'Roman' cement. In use from 1811 until the 1930s; both mill and kiln still extant. More similar drifts can be found in other local Alum Quarries for the same purpose.
