Return

Quite excited we kit'd up and made a return trip only to discover that the thing to be seen in the adit is indeed a collapse, not sure if it's been deliberately collpased or not. Still couldn't find the airshaft and think thats been filled in/ covered too, it was reported to be open in 1996. Big shame as this was reputedly the most impressive mine in the NYM from an explorers point of view, not that I'll ever know.

Sil Howe Drift

The rough track above Goatland station was a horse drawn tramway which lead to a drift mine entrance at Grid Ref. 840 027. This ran underground approximately 600m to the Whinstone Dyke, the line of quarries can be seen further to the north. Currently water flows from the drift mouth and during operation the water was channelled along the tramway to the pond/ reservoir above the station where it was then used to power a Pelton wheel in the station yard which in turn drove a crusher for the whinstone.
