for a lakeland slate mine- the old man workings are vast; the Honister workings are also vast but the Hoinster mines are far more explored that these; What's more is that that the old man workings are fitted with several vertical pitches which are very unusual for any lakeland slate mine. An example of one of these shafts is at skald kop- from the dangerous, unstable chambers at skald cop leading down to a close-head in spion kop 'directly below'. from this close-head at spion kop there is then another shaft leading down to Moss Head. Skald Kop should prove to be quite intresting but many of these workings are quite early and some of the earlier works are actually in tunnels.
