Warren Moor Ironstone Mine

Had a drive down to Warren Moor yesterday(15/ 7/ 07),with thanks to Jim Wallace and Simon Chapman for info posted. Due to recent rainfall it is very wet and overgrown up there in, fact the heavens opened again at lunchtime.I was pleased to see the restoration work carried out,it also included a lightning rod inside the chimmney stack. The water level is almost to the surface at the moment in what I think is the up shaft, down shaft is only partially flooded. Not sure whether cows/ sheep or humans have knocked down the wire fence round the downshaft but had to restrain 2 young lads on mountain bikes as they were about to walk into the shaft!!its really well hidden with undergrowth.Think I have found a drift which maybe useable into the Dogger Seam Will explore further when and if we get any rain free weather.

Warren Moor Mine.

Detailed history of the site and the results of excavation in 1980 by John Owen can be found in Cleveland Industrial Archaeologist No.13 of 1981. Water level in the pumping shaft is maintained by a drain to the nearby stream but John considered the other shaft was never sunk to its full depth. View 9261 shows the engine bed of the single cylinder horizontal steam winding engine which also the pumping gear. A crank on the other end of the drum-shaft drove a connecting rod to quadrants placed each side of the shaft which drove vertical reciprocating pumps towards the shaft bottom. The quadrants were placed within the below ground vault which Jim refers to as the underground pump house, but were probably never completely installed.
