Possibly my finest moment was when I acted on an old miners information in 1971 and waded through chest deep water. It was later used in a BBC film, with the late Wynford Vaughan Thomas, and they were not prepared to carry expensive cameras through the water.

What the Wheel Did.
The mine worked a mineral lode cutting vertically through mudstone. After shallow escavationsin the early 1800's a deep shaft was sunk in 1871 and the underground waterwheel was installed for pumping. This wheel operated a recipricating chain connected by an angle bob to pump rods in the shaft.
A further feature of the machine was a winding drum for raising ore from the shaft.
A clutch mechanism connected the winding drum to the waterwheel drive when required.
