Description

Rydal Cave is a good example of a 'cave slate mine':- where slate was mined in a large singular chamber open to the hillside. There are two caves at rydal; the lower is within forestry and consists of a large chamber in a small pit, there is also a small tunnel from this chamber leading into a further chamber. The lower chamber was probably much larger- as the remains of a piller are still in place just outside the chamber that suggests that the roof may have been removed. The upper chamber is huge, and is supported only by an arch at the entrance.
