Rhosydd Slate Mine - Air Shaft

Rhosydd Slate Quarry: Air Shaft

Looking down an airshaft with water pouring over the edge. I suspect the water used to drive a fan in the shaft for forced-ventilation.

The shaft is square in section, neatly cut, and pretty large. It almost looks like it was built to take a cage, coal-mine style, but I doubt that's the case. Headgear and cages were very rare in the Welsh Slate industry, I know of only one mine that employed them.
